Bodies of unrest.
We are within the time of great unrest.
Unsettledness
and panic swarms.
Swarms that rush through bodies of land
and bodies of flesh alike.
Land saturated with heavy rains,
drains spilling
volcano’s purging
ashes and gases spewing.
Storms in frenzy.
The reverberation of bombs that shatter
bone and belonging.
Nervous systems attune to great bodies of resonance.
Fields of hyper arousal,
fear, disturbance.
It’s easier to numb out,
collapse
dissociate.
Deities of panic,
please do not consume me.
I receive weekly email contemplations from Tantra Illuminated, a classical Tantra online learning platform. I usually find that the suggested contemplation is exactly the strand of conscious awareness I need to make sense of what I am experiencing. This week’s contemplation was on the third sutra of the 11th century text, the Pratyabhijñāhṛdayam. It states:
“It is diverse because it is divided into mutually adapted subjects and objects…”
The ‘it’ here is in reference to consciousness itself. That we, as both subjects and objects of expressed consciousness, actively shape our experiences and the lived experiences of others through our own distortions and projections. Or put more simply, we live in accordance with the conscious and unconscious lenses which cloud our perception of reality.
This means that in relationships and social interactions the dynamics created, the roles played, and the roles that others play for us are fulfilled, shaped and morphed by our own and other’s projections or judgements. We essentially fulfill our own and one another’s projected stories, roles and realities. These become interacting objects in the fields of our experience and affect how we relate to and experience everything. You may have familiarity with the sensation that you are fulfilling a stereotype or role for someone during an interaction, or notice that around a certain person you always revert into the same role, dynamic or pattern, even when we may have awareness of it. Families and partners can be wonderful mirrors for this phenomenon.
As this contemplation settled within me, I was guided back to the work of Rupert Sheldrake on morphic resonance fields. Morphic resonance theory speaks to the non-tangible yet self-organising structures that are held very much alive in our collective and individual memory. Morphic fields are cumulative, and the more a pattern is repeated or a behaviour, impulse or thought occurs, the field around it becomes stronger and more amplified. This increases its potential for habituality, and therefore the likelihood of it occurring again. These fields traverse time and space, connecting us to our human, animal and mineral ancestors and their experiences of consciousness from the beginning of time.
Mia Kalef the wonderful cranial sacral therapist and author speaks to the family field, where she describes that events and individuals closer to us in linear time and space hold more influence over our current, present experience of reality. This is why we so often repeat and hand-down family and cultural narratives and dynamics from our most recent several thousands of years of ancestry. Very few of us embody the consciousness of the prehistoric being, which actually makes up the majority of our human history and ancestry. This cellular memory of a more liberated and awakened experience is activating again within the collective field of consciousness.
So both morphic resonance fields and the subject and object influence of perception illuminated to us through ancient tantrik text guides us to the same frame of understanding of our current situation. That what is being experienced through our individual body, the insomnia, anxiety, fatigue and dissociation that is drip-fed to us through our nervous system as our guiding antenna, is just a mirror fragment of the great collective body of unrest. For the past 5-6000 years, we as a species have been feeding the cumulative narratives, frames and behaviours that stem from scarcity. The work of Marija Gimbutas, the radical Lithuanian anthropologist, speaks to this period of time we so often refer to as “Patriarchy” as an epoch where a real or experienced lack of abundance (scarcity) and the trauma and fear this inflicted created pathways of dominance, accumulation and control to try and abate this experience of suffering. These are objects within our greater human field of experience, which means that according to morphic resonance theory, we will continue to embody and seek out experiences that affirm these experiences to be true. Strengthening and solidifying them as we go.
These are also experiences embedded within the very land and elemental realms themselves. For not only are we all quite physically entangled together in this great web of life, woven of water, mineral, fungi, bacteria and gas, but we have also materialised and ingrained these beliefs through physical acts to and upon the earth. These have had ripple effects out into every ecosystem, water body, and even the atmosphere surrounding our planet. The body of the earth herself is no doubt experiencing great unrest also, with so much physical fracture, strain, extraction and control.
So you could say that the storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and increasing heat is our earth simply embodying and amplifying the great morphic field of our individual and collective human unrest. We all co-create, stabilise, ingrain, and repeat these thoughts, acts and deeds of unrest together daily. Then as the body of earth responds, with what we describe as ‘catastrophic weather events’, the embodiment of unrest deepens within the human nervous system and psyche. You could say the earth is crying, unsettled, not sleeping. And her bursts of outrage are increasing.
The war out there starts very much in here, within our own bodies. We are both subject and object of everything, as the ancient tantrik sutras say, and this consciousness is diverse and amplifies deed by deed, moment by moment, thought by thought, and being by being. The field of fear strengthens and accumulates the more we feed it with our own unrest, and it is as though we are witnessing a pinnacle escalation of this fear and scarcity consciousness playing out between our governments, corporations, and so-called institutions of power on the main stage.
But somewhere, there is a pattern interrupt. Or how do things ever change? Even deeply encoded within our human DNA there is sequence interruption. In human genetics there are start codons, and when they appear the body knows to begin cellular development newly from that place. They begin to etch a new pathway and projection, and these start codons are activating within our individual and collective bodies of consciousness.
Every reaction, feeling, sensation or thought that strays away from our accumulated body of unrest, dominance and control is an act of liberation leading us closer to love. To listen deeply to the body and it’s communication is already a pattern interrupt. A great tool of this epoch of dominance has been body control, and the overriding of our innate wisdom and intuition. We self-replicate control and dominance by overworking, not resting when our body is tired, not nourishing it with nutritious food when it is hungry or apathetic. Not removing ourselves from situations or dynamics that, for whatever reason, our body does not feel comfortable in anymore, and moving on when something is no longer serving our higher purpose.
It is time to tune in through the antenna of our own individual body and listen again to our collective human body and the great body of earth. What acts of liberation and love can we pattern interrupt and attune to as we witness the anguish and screams of our great collective pain body unearthing? As the wars and volcanoes erupt, they will be erupting within us individually as shadows, traumas, and old memories are resurfacing. The field is open. They want to be witnessed, loved and seen, without us recapitulating tyranny, control, judgement or suppression upon ourselves. Every time we compassionately forgive ourselves or make space for rest in replacement of production we are re-wiring these new pathways within the morphic field.
Creation, love and liberation can also exist within this great body of unrest. They are, in fact, the start codons.
Your liberation is my liberation.
